Indigenous Peoples Questions
The concept of Indigenous sovereignty refers to the inherent right of Indigenous peoples to self-governance and self-determination within their traditional territories. It recognizes their authority to make decisions regarding their own political, social, economic, and cultural affairs, and to maintain and protect their lands, resources, and cultural heritage. Indigenous sovereignty is based on the understanding that Indigenous peoples have pre-existing and inherent rights that existed prior to the establishment of colonial governments, and these rights should be respected and upheld.
