Describe the role of Miguel Hidalgo in the Mexican War of Independence.

Miguel Hidalgo played a significant role in the Mexican War of Independence. He was a Catholic priest who became a leader and symbol of the independence movement in Mexico. On September 16, 1810, Hidalgo delivered the famous "Grito de Dolores" (Cry of Dolores), which called for the end of Spanish rule and the liberation of Mexico. This marked the beginning of the war for independence. Hidalgo led a large peasant army, known as the "Insurgent Army," and fought against the Spanish forces. Although his army achieved some early victories, they were eventually defeated by the Spanish. Hidalgo was captured and executed in 1811, but his actions and ideas inspired others to continue the fight for independence. His role in the Mexican War of Independence is remembered and celebrated as a key figure in Mexico's struggle for freedom.
