Future Tense Questions Medium
In reported speech, the future tense is used to convey someone's words or thoughts about future events or actions. When reporting someone's statement or question in the future tense, we generally make the following changes:
1. Change the verb tense: The verb in the reported speech is usually shifted back to the past tense. For example, if the original statement was "I will go to the party tomorrow," it would be reported as "He said he would go to the party the next day."
2. Change time expressions: Time expressions indicating future time are also adjusted accordingly. For instance, "next week" may become "the following week" or "tomorrow" may become "the next day" in reported speech.
3. Modals and auxiliary verbs: Modals and auxiliary verbs are also adjusted in reported speech. For example, "I will have finished my work by then" would be reported as "She said she would have finished her work by then."
It is important to note that the changes in reported speech depend on the original tense used in the direct speech. If the original statement is already in the past tense, there may not be any changes required in reported speech.
